No recovery from poor first half

Radcliffe Borough Report

Kendal Town lost 3-2 to Radcliffe Borough at The Pye Motors Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Rob Orlando-Young’s first-half brace and Carl Peers' goal saw the Mintcakes 3-0 down at the break. Kendal battled back in the second half through Rick Seear and Ben Thomas, while the visitors were reduced to ten men when Jake Doran was shown a straight red for a bad challenge on Stuart McDonald.

However, despite the numerical advantage, Kendal were unable to complete the comeback as Radcliffe held on for the win, while the hosts paid the price for an abject first half display.

Radcliffe, who are now managed by former Manchester City striker Jon Macken and former Chelsea defender Frank Sinclair, had the better of the first half while Kendal struggled.

The visitors created numerous opportunities in the opening exchanges through Orlando-Young and James Hooper, while Kendal’s best moment fell to Connor Gaul who hit the crossbar.

Radcliffe opened the scoring after 19 minutes when Peers finished from close range after capitalising on a mistake by Will Kitchen.

The visitors extended their advantage on the half hour mark when Orlando-Young got onto the end of an assist by Hooper before placing the ball past Kitchen.

Radcliffe made it 3-0 in the 40th minute when Young scored his second of the afternoon, after making the most of some bad defending by the hosts.

Kendal got back into the game nine minutes into the second half when Seear powered the ball into the net after getting onto the end of a clinical pass by Gaul.

The visitors missed a glorious opportunity five minutes later as Young was denied by Kitchen who pushed the ball away for a corner.

Radcliffe were reduced to ten men when Doran was given his marching orders, but Kendal struggled to make the man advantage count.

Ben Thomas scored with two minutes remaining to ensure a tense finale. The Mintcakes pushed forward as the game went into injury time, but Rob Bowman was unable to get onto the end of a knock down in the penalty area while an in swinging corner caused mayhem in the Radcliffe penalty area before the visiting keeper pounced on the ball. Substitute Matt Clarke also caused problems as the pacy winger made a probing run down the right before seeing his pass across the back cleared away.

However, Radcliffe held to take the three points.
