Former Kendal Town striker Jordan Connerton ran riot against his former club as he netted a hat trick in Lancaster City's 3-0 win over the Mintcakes on Easter Monday.

The result moves the Giant Axe side to the brink of promotion as they moved to the top the table, one point ahead of Farsley Celtic who visit the Pye Motors Stadium on Saturday.

Kendal were behind after just five minutes on Monday, when Connerton reacted quickest to a deep Gavin Clark cross to volley home past Will Kitchen.

The Mintcakes did well to stay in the contest but Lancaster continued to look the more threatening as Kitchen was twice called into action to keep Kendal in the match.

He first produced a stunning save to tip a close-range Josh Earl around the post before he held onto a Craig Carney effort from distance.

But in the second half the resolve was broken as Connerton struck again. Seven minutes after the restart Carney picked out another ex-Mintacke, Tom Kilifin, who swapped clubs earlier this season, inside the area. Kilifin was denied from 12 yards by Kitchen but Connerton was on hand to tap home the rebound.

Connerton completed his hat trick, for his 25th goal of the season, when he latched onto a Billy Akrigg ball over the Kendal defence and kept his head to slot past the onrushing Kitchen.

Clark then had a series of chances in the final moments but saw two headers sail wide and the Mintcakes defence cleared another effort off the line to keep the score at 3-0.

Kendal play their last game of the season with a 3pm kick off at home to second-placed Farsley Celtic on Saturday.
