Report: Kendal Town Vs North Ferriby Utd

Saturday 29th October 2011

Chance after chance went begging for Town's strikers as a clinical North Ferriby taught Kendal's forwards a lesson in quality finishing. Despite having less than half as many chances to score as the home side, it was to be the visitors who took all three points back to Humberside.

Kendal Town were left to rue missed chances as they went down 3-2 at home to North Ferriby United this afternoon, Saturday.

Town started brightly in their first league match for a month and should have gone ahead within 90 seconds when Danny Williams zipped down the left wing and whipped a ball in for Mark Jackson, but the centre forward fired at keeper Adam Nicklin from two yards, before Ashley Dunn headed the rebound wide.

Two minutes later Jackson cut the ball back for Dunn who mistimed his effort and the ball fell to Kevin Leadbetter, but the midfielders drive from the edge of the box was blocked and went for a throw in.

Lee Ashcroft's men continued to press at pace and when Ciaran Donnelly lofted a corner into the box it was met by a Ferriby defender and crept just wide of the far post.

Against the run of play though it was the visitors who took the lead when Peter Davidson latched on to a through ball.

Keeping his composure he held off Steven Swinglehurst and fired under returning keeper Craig Dootson for a 1-0 lead on 12 minutes.

After the goal Town settled again and kept the pressure on the away goal without causing too many problems.

But as the half hour mark approached, Town should have been level when Jackson lofted a ball into the box but keeper Nicklin collected as Gary McEvatt closed in.

Town grabbed their deserved equaliser on 35 minutes but it took a sublime piece of football from Leadbetter to do it.

Taking the ball off Williams 35 yards out Leadbetter poised himself and then pulled the trigger, the result seeing the ball fly from his foot, off the left post and nestling in the bottom right corner.

The sucker punch came just before the break for Town though as Ferriby scrambled a dubious free kick into the net, Danny Clarke getting the final touch.

After the interval the game became scrappy as Town sought a way back against a resilient Yorkshire side, but chances came and went for Ashcroft's men.

On 64 minutes Alex Taylor replaced McEvatt and Neil Wainwright was on for Leadbetter soon after but there was nothing doing in the final third.

Sensing victory was on the cards, Ferriby turned their A game on and went in search of a third, which they found on 78 minutes when Paul Harsley struck from 25 yards straight into the back of Dootson's net.

Town's fightback was swift and just two minutes later Jackson put the ball in the net after rounding Nicklin and striking to the bottom right corner from eight yards.

In the dying stages Wainwright stuck a ball in the air for Taylor, but Nicklin collected before Taylor could get to it and Town had to settle for yet another league defeat.
