Goal fest at The Cosyseal as high-flying Town Ladies net fifteen to remain the pace setters at the top of the Cumbria Women's League.
[Match Report by David Shankley]
Player’s player of the match; Michelle Raven got Kendal off to a great start with a glancing header from a Nicola Martindale corner, with only four minutes on the clock. Michelle added to her tally with eleven minutes remaining, but in between was constantly tormenting the Penrith defence with powerful runs down the right and delivering many crosses for other Town players to capitalise.
Kendal pressed home their advantage early on in this encounter; on 11 minutes, a passing movement started by Lauren Hackett, linking in Nicola Martindale found Nessa Temple ready to slot the ball home from close range. A 20 yard freekick routine saw Lauren Downham’s strong shot hit the back of the net for 3 – 0 on 16 minutes. Both Nessa & Lauren went on to complete their hat tricks in this high scoring game.
However, despite the scoreline, today’s visitors played really well during two periods of this game. In the first half, although being three down at the time, Penrith could have been back in the game at 3-2, had they made more of an excellent through ball, which their striker put inches wide with only the home keeper to beat and two minutes later, Monica Staniek had to make a double save when a good free kick from distance was palmed onto, then rebounded off the post, safely in the keeper’s hands!
This was the wake-up call Kendal needed and they then went about their football more assertively, scoring regularly throughout the remainder of the half. The best of these goals summed up Kendal’s totally committed performance; the move started in the back four and involved a sequence of ten passes, before being despatched into the net, with power, by Nicola Martindale – Total football!; Nicola also hit the post twice in the same five minute period before the break! Half time 9 – 0.
Penrith came out fighting in the second half and following a good spell of football from them, they deservedly clawed one back after 56 minutes, when their striker kept her cool to slide the ball past the oncoming home keeper. Jen Carradus ‘levelled the half’ two minutes later, but it was four goals in five minutes, including two from Jo Thompson (adding to her brace in the first half) that effectively finished the contest.
Substitute Becca Knowles scored her first of the season in the closing minutes to make it 15 – 1 on the day.
Great football & a great result to keep Kendal Town Ladies at the top of the Cumbria Women’s League.
