Kendal Town were sent crashing out of the FA Cup with a 2-1 defeat to Nantwich Town in Cheshire.

After a fairly even first half, the sides went in level, but Kendal went on the attack straight from the restart and took a 47th minute lead.

Danny Williams latched on to a through ball 20 yards out and held off his marker as he broke into the box and he stroked the ball calmly past John Brain in the Nantwich goal to give Town the lead.

But the hosts remained composed and having already had two first half efforts ruled out for offside, levelled the tie just ten minutes later.

And the goal came from a set piece as keeper Tom Newton failed to control a corner kick and it landed for JJ Bailey to tap home at the back post.

The hosts took what proved to be a tenacious game to the visitors and Michael Lennon could have given Nantwich a lead on the hour mark but Danny Wisdom dove to deflect the ball behind.

And just moments later Fraser McLachlan struck the post after good work from Chris Flynn.

If Town were getting lucky, it wasn't to last as the hosts forged their way into the lead with just less than 20 minutes to go.

Right back Aleksandrs Solovjovs collected the ball 25 yards out and a superb piece of control saw him set the ball and drive it through the box to Newton's bottom right corner with the young stopper unable to get down quick enough to stop the strike.

Town boss Lee Ashcroft brought on strikers Alex Taylor and Mark Jackson as they went in search of an equaliser to force a replay but it wasn't to be for Town.

As the game reached its dying stages Town's best pressure couldn't count as a Kevin Leadbetter strike fizzed wide, while Jackson shot inches over the bar.

Injury time came and so too did more Town opportunities as Taylor broke into the box but a weak shot was easily swept up by Brain and the Town faithful went home with revenge in their minds as they now prepare for Nantwich at home in the FA Trophy next Saturday.
