Braces from strikers Alex Taylor and Wayne Curtis and a late strike by midfielder Ashley Dunn were enough to earn Town a comfortable victory and safe passage to the second round of the Lancashire FA Trophy.

Kendal Town brushed aside Clitheroe with an accomplished display at Parkside Road.

But it was not until the half hour mark that the Black and Whites imposed themselves on the game, although recalled Alex Taylor did earlier have a bullet header saved superbly from point-blank range by visiting keeper Zach Hibbert.

Andy Naylor, the huge Clitheroe centre forward, was pulling the strings for the visiting side, but Neil Wainwright and Danny Williams were combining to great effect down the Kendal left.

And it was a Wainwright curling ball which wasn’t properly cleared by Clitheroe that broke the deadlock. Taylor pounced on the ball and finished with aplomb to put Kendal in front.

Ten minutes later, a Mark Peers corner was headed out to Taylor on the edge of the box, who neatly shuffled the ball from his right to his left foot and curled a beauty into the top right hand corner of the Clitheroe goal.

The second half started as the first ended, with Kieran Walmsley’s free kick superbly saved by Hibbert soon after the restart. On the hour mark, Kendal made it 3-0 after Walmsley’s effort from 30 yards was deflected twice by the visiting defenders.

The second touch caused the ball to lob over Hibbert’s head, and the keeper tried desperately to keep the ball out. But Hibbert was forced to palm the ball into open play to stop him carrying it over the line, so Wayne Curtis gratefully mopped up and easily finished in the back of the net.

The third goal signalled a five-minute session of complacency from Kendal as Clitheroe threatened to come back into the game.

On the 70-minute mark, a long ball found Nathan Taylor beyond the Kendal back line in what looked a clear offside. He was one-on-one with Craig Dootson, took the ball past him, and slotted in the empty net to reduce the visiting side’s arrears.

But it was the wake-up call Kendal needed and not long after, Curtis grabbed his second goal of the game. Some neat play on the Kendal right by Wainwright, who was switched to right midfield in the second half, substitute Tom Kilifin and Walmsley gained the home side yards. The ball was switched to Williams, who crossed into the danger area and Curtis lunged at the back post to restore Kendal’s three goal advantage.

And with the last kick of the game, skipper for the night Ashley Dunn caught Clitheroe on the counter attack with a 70-yard run, leaving him one-on-one with the keeper and defenders trailing in his wake. Dunn coolly slotted past Hibbert, and Kendal’s passage into the next round was complete.
