Town started brightly and could have taken the lead in the fifth minute through Wayne Curtis.
Mark Jackson collected the ball on the left wing and passed infield to Kevin Leadbetter.
A lovely through ball cut the defence open but Curtis' effort was well stopped by Vics stopped Ben Hinchliffe.
Two minutes later Jackson got a shot away but it lost pace and was easily collected.
Town had been making much of the play but went behind against the run of play when Steve Abbott fired home from close range after Paul Ennis got around the back of Keiran Walmsley.
With Danny Williams filling in for Danny Wisdom at the back, Town have played a very attacking game and Curtis put a free header wide of Hinchlife's goal on 26 minutes.
Ten minutes minutes later Mark Peers was played through by Kevin Leadbetter, but his shot went straight to Hinchliffe.
Vics could have extended the lead just before the break when Ennis ran at goal but his effort was deflected behind for a corner.
The hosts started the second half well and could have gone 2-0 up on 47 minutes when Ennis headed wide.
Town were always in the game at just 1-0 behind and had their chances to level.
On 51 minutes Leadbetter won a corner for Town which resulted in a long range effort of his glancing wide of the post.
Just two minutes later it was Leadbetter again taking the game to Vics and a strike from 25 yards also edged wide of Hinchliffe's goal without causing too much trouble for the home keeper.
Just after the hour mark Lee Ashcroft replaced Wayne Curtis and Mark Peers with Alex Taylor and Tom Kilfin but Town were mainly restricted to efforts from outside the box.
Pushing for a leveller, Town played some flowing football and could have been back on terms on 69 minutes when Marc Joseph stole in at the back post but he skied Jackson's cross from the left.
And as the game drew towards the final whistle, it was Jackson who had a great effort to nod home but as he went to bullet into the net he was flagged offside.
With Town pushing for an equaliser they were left exposed at the back and superbly timed through ball from Kyle Armstrong played sub David Fitzgerald in and he slotted under Dootson to seal the points and a 2-0 win for Vics.
Town will look to bounce back at Chasetown on Saturday, kick off 3pm.
